Aromatherapy and use of essential oils in pregnancy

aromatherapy-pregnancyIt is very important to study and learn as much as possible about an essential oil before considering its use in pregnancy. Some essential oils are composed of very active chemical components that can be toxic and dangerous in pregnancy. Be especially careful about using any essential oils in the first three months of pregnancy, when miscarriage is most likely to occur. Some essential oils may cause skin sensitization or irritation and this may be heightened in pregnancy.

Examples of essential oils that should be avoided in pregnancy are:

  • Basil
  • Clove
  • Cinnamon
  • Coriander
  • Fennel
  • Ginger
  • Juniper
  • Myrrh
  • Nutmeg
  • Parsley

Aromatherapy oils are often used with an aromatherapy diffuser. This works by diffusing the scent of the oils into the air. Diffusers can also be used to bring a sweet smell to the interior of your car, or can be worn around your neck to scent the air closest to you.

I’ve heard that lemon essential oil is especially helpful for naseau. Great list of healthy essential oils for pregnancy. I agree that a qualified aroma therapist is best equipped to recommend the right oil or oils for you…and when they do, you’re in for a sensory treat!
